English I Syllabus for 2007-2008 Textbooks: The Language of Literature: Grade 9 Novels: The Odyssey - HomerRomeo & Juliet - William Shakespeare To Kill A Mockingbird - Harper Lee Writing Portfolio: Students will be required to keep and maintain a personal writing portfolio that will be passed from their 9th to their 10th grade ELA teacher in order to achieve progress and growth in writing pieces that are required for this grade level. The following is a list of writing assignments that will be required: 1) Literary Response, 2) Expository Response, 3) Cross-over Response, 4) Essay with proficiency in MLA documentation, 5) Reflective response, 6) Narrative Response Major Project: The Odyssey novel project will be presented by Mrs. Glenda Goodwin, DHS counselor, involving character education development. Time Limit: Approximately 3 weeks (semester class) 6 weeks (all year class) Materials: Students are responsible for providing the following materials: Pen (blue/black) Pencil (optional) 3 ring binder (1 1/2 inch) Notebook Paper (wide ruled)
Grading Policy: Averages for each nine-week period will be calculated as follows: 50% - daily average 50% - test/quiz average Academic misconduct: Cheating and plagiarism harm the academic environment and will not be permitted. Students and parents are required to sign and return a plagiarism document before any research is allowed. A grade of zero will be given for any detected misconduct. Cheating is defined as any form of intellectual dishonesty or misrepresentation of one’s knowledge. Plagiarism, a form of cheating, consists of representing someone else’s work as one’s own. Detailed information concerning plagiarism will be discussed when the research paper is introduced during the term. See the student handbook for additional comments and possible disciplinary actions. Nine-week examination: A comprehensive examination will be given at the end of each nine week period for eighteen week classes and each eighteen week period for year long classes. Tutorials: Lunch tutorials are available Monday-Thursday from 1:35-1:50. Students are assigned tutorials when work is late and/or when students need to make up tests/quizzes given during the week. One day advance notice will be given with teacher/student approval and the student will be required to meet during that time. All students will sign in when they are present for tutorials for documentation of attendance and/or non-attendance. Absences: The student is solely responsible for completing any missed work. I give students' one extra day for each day they are absent per school policy to complete their work. Late work policy: Daily assignments will be accepted one day late for a grade of 70. If the assignment is not turned in on that day, the grade will reflect a zero. This affords every student the opportunity to receive partial credit. I encourage every student to turn in their daily work on the due date assigned. Course description: The freshman-level English course is based on extensive reading and interpretation of texts in multiple genres from world literature. Emphasis will be placed on writing, vocabulary and perfecting grammar skills.
